      Polysucrose 400 (Ficoll 400), white crystalline powder. soluble in water. Stable in neutral and alkaline solutions. Hydrolysis breaks down at pH<3. Using sucrose and epichlorohydrin as raw materials, it is a synthetic water-soluble polymer made by the copolymerization of sucrose and 3-chloro-1,2-propylene oxide, with a molecular weight of about 4×105. Widely used as a medium for density gradient centrifugation. It can also be used as an inert carrier for low molecular weight haptens in immunological research. Ficoll-400 is often used, that is, the relative molecular weight is 400,000. Polysucrose 400 has a low osmotic pressure, but its viscosity is very high. For this reason, it is often mixed with diatrizoate to reduce the viscosity.
