Polysucrose (CAS number 26873-85-8), known by the trade name Ficoll, is a polymer derived from sucrose and epichlorohydrin, subsequently purified through ultrafiltration or fractional precipitation. Characterized by a highly branched structure, abundant hydroxyl content, excellent solubility in aqueous solutions, and notable biodegradability and biocompatibility, polysucrose finds extensive applications in biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, and related fields. Its raw material, sucrose, being a renewable and cost-effective resource with high purity, contributes to its widespread use.

In comparison to dextran, polysucrose exhibits a more spherical structure and less flexibility. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis of polysucrose and dextran fractions of similar molecular weights reveals that polysucrose has a smaller hydrodynamic volume, leading to a longer retention time. Notably, polysucrose is more sensitive to acidic conditions than dextran, necessitating caution when working at acidic pH levels.
